What Is GEO? A Guide to Being Visible in AI Search
What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), how does it differ from SEO, and what steps get you cited in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answers? A practical guide.
What exactly is GEO?
Instead of typing a query into Google and scanning ten blue links, users now ask an AI assistant directly. The assistant compiles an answer from several sources and often links to them. GEO is the set of practices that aims to put your site among those sources.
In classic SEO the goal is a ranking, such as being in the top three for 'web design agency'. In GEO the goal is a citation: your name and link appearing in the AI's answer to 'Which agencies do web design in Istanbul?'
How GEO differs from SEO
- SEO targets a position in a results list; GEO targets being a source inside an answer.
- SEO cares about click-through rate; GEO cares about mention frequency and being described correctly.
- SEO rewards long, comprehensive content; GEO also loves clear, single-paragraph definitions and answers.
- GEO does not replace SEO. Most AI systems draw on search indexes, so good SEO is a prerequisite for GEO.
7 steps to visibility in AI search
- Open the door to crawlers: make sure robots.txt doesn't block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended.
- Add llms.txt: place a Markdown file in the root that summarizes your site and its most important pages.
- Use structured data: say who you are in machine-readable form with Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList.
- Write answer blocks: every key page should have a 'short answer' paragraph that answers the question in 2–3 sentences.
- Keep entities consistent: write your brand name, address, phone and social profiles the same way everywhere.
- Don't trap content in JavaScript: most crawlers don't run JavaScript, so key text must arrive as server-rendered HTML.
- Stay fresh: dated, regularly updated content is cited more often in AI answers.
What content gets cited by AI?
AI systems prefer precise, verifiable, well-structured information. Numbers, dated statements, clear definitions, comparison tables and step-by-step lists raise the chance of being cited. Unverifiable marketing claims like 'the best' are usually ignored.
How do you measure GEO results?
There is no standard panel like Search Console yet. In practice we use three methods: asking target questions to different assistants regularly and tracking mention rate, watching referrers like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in analytics, and checking AI crawler visit frequency in server logs.
How do AI systems choose their sources?
When ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity answer a question, they first gather candidate pages from search indexes or their own crawlers, then pick the passages that answer the question most clearly. Three things decide the choice: the page is accessible, the content answers the question directly, and the source is recognized as a trustworthy entity.
That is why a long but scattered article can lose to a short, clear definition paragraph. AI wants to quote a paragraph, so it helps when that paragraph makes sense on its own, opens with a clear subject and verb, and contains verifiable facts such as numbers or dates.
Why does entity consistency matter so much?
Language models recognize brands not as individual pages but as entities with attributes: name, founding year, address, services and social profiles. If these conflict between your website, Google Business Profile, social media and industry directories, the model can't be sure about your brand and avoids mentioning you.
- Use the same spelling of your brand name everywhere; avoid abbreviations and variants.
- List all official profiles with sameAs in your Organization schema.
- State your founding year, team and expertise factually on your About page.
- Keep name, address and phone (NAP) identical across all platforms.
Content checklist for GEO
- Open every page with a short-answer block that answers the question in 2–3 sentences.
- Write headings as the questions users actually ask.
- Present comparisons as tables or bullet lists.
- Back claims with numbers, dates and sources.
- Show published and updated dates on the page and in schema.
- Mark up FAQs with FAQPage schema.
Common GEO mistakes
The most common mistake is unknowingly blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt; some security plugins and CDN settings do this by default. The second is loading key content only with JavaScript. The third is writing for keyword density and forgetting to answer the real question. AI systems reward clear answers, not keyword repetition.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate website for GEO?
No. GEO consists of improvements to your existing site's technical foundation and content structure.
When do GEO results show?
Crawlers can take a few weeks to recrawl the site. Changes in AI answers are usually observed within 1–3 months.
